Mediating the Dream / Les genres et médias du rêve

International Symposium, Saarbrücken, 29–31.08.2018

Choosing a literary genre or a medium of art always means opting for possibilities and for limitations. This is, of course, also true for the telling or artistic representation of dreams. In our 2018 symposium – the fourth in our series – we are looking for papers which analyze the specific options, opportunities, and restrictions which specific genres and media offer for the narration, functionalization and artistic portrayal of factual and fictional dreams. We are hoping for a broad survey of as many genres and media from as many periods of literary history and different cultures as possible. As always, our approach towards dreams will not be a psychoanalytical one; we are reading dreams within their historical context, i.e. related to the dream-theories of the author and his age. Congress languages will be English and French. Presentations (30 minutes) should be focused on three or four examples of dream representations in one specific genre or medium. These examples should vary broadly enough to give a picture of typical variants in the respective genre/medium; they must be chosen from the work of different authors/artists (choosing examples from different cultures is strongly encouraged but not obligatory).
