Abstract

Literature not only poses questions – it also provides us with answers. Hölderlin's hymnal fragment Der Adler does both: In its first part it recapitulates Hölderlin´s central concept of the migration of culture from East to West. Thus it takes the process of human culture in general as its central theme. The first part of the poem ends with the question »Where do we want to stay?« (»Wo wollen wir bleiben?«) and thus asks for the meaning of the cultural process in general. In doing this Hölderlin's fragment takes part in a discussion that was initiated by Rousseau and Herder; it poses the questions: What is human culture? and: What has the cultural process brought to mankind? The second part of the fragment answers these questions with a sequence of paradoxical sentences that finally end with »us« (»wir«) being brought back to our fundamental rhythm and our corporeality. Literary studies that take a cultural turn – so this essay argues – have to take seriously the aesthetic structure of poetic texts and to contribute to their better understanding. This does not lead away from the texts – it leads right into them.
