Abstract

Focusing on the themes of travel and adventure, this article argues that, while the tourism industry in 1925 promotes a familiar and comforting form of domesticated exoticism, the French aesthetic avant-garde seeks to revive a deepened sense of the exotic and the uncanny within the very familiarities of everyday life. Through a reading of often conflicting texts from L’Illustration to La Révolution surréaliste, »Surréalisme et tourisme en 1925« examines the figure of the sphinx as an indicator of the nervous interplay between cult and industry.
