Abstract

The essay explores the bilingualism and identity of the German-Jewish writer Michael Hamburger (born 1924) in three steps: (1) It gives an account of Hamburger’s development from a native speaker of German to a British writer; (2) it discusses his own notions of bilingualism; (3) this perspective then serves as a basis for the interpretation of Hamburger’s German writing. In conclusion, the article analyses the relationship between Hamburger’s Jewish identity and his literary identity.
