Abstract

The essay examines the perception of Japan in some novels of German female writers around 1900. Whereas the male perspective on Japan was obsessed with the phantasma of the geisha, the female writers were interested in problems of the emancipation of Japanese women. This perception of Japan, however, is problematic, too, because the German female writers used their ideal of the German woman as a model for the emancipation of the Japanese women. Therefore the meaning of ›emancipation‹ in their novels was basically: turn – more or less – into a German woman.
