Abstract

It is a humane concern of literature to express and represent pain. But this task is nearly insolvable, and leads to a conflict between literature's aesthetic demands and its mimetic ambitions. Literary representations of suffering either stylise and thus distort agony - or become unaesthetic in their attempt to express pain in a direct and ›naturalistic‹ way.
