Abstract

The complex relationship between the hands and the head, between intellect and action, is usually discussed in neurological or medical terms. Yet there is a different kind of knowledge, provided by literary and philosophical texts and films, which subverts the hierarchical concept that reason is superior to action. Hands acting independently of their owner, hands fighting each other, hands rebelling against reason: these motifs do not simply represent uncanny images of alienation. All of the fingers on these hands also point toward general issues such as individuality and control, thus demonstrating that hands are much more than mere organs of execution.
