The Role of Dream in Modern(ist) Gothic (Re-)Imaginings across Literature, Painting, and Film




Incongruous materials in defiance of proclaimed ruling philosophies are a commonplace feature of literature and the several arts rather than an exception in European cultural repertories over the centuries. This is obvious not only in the literature and pictorial arts of Modernism but also in the new medium of cinema drawing on them. The ways in which the resilient Gothic craze of the late Enlightenment has repeatedly metamorphosed and survived down to the present in newer forms illustrates the virtually independent life of key themes and motifs in the texture of every age.
