Milieu, Stil und Medien. Umrisse einer Mediologie der Literaturkritik zwischen Früher Neuzeit und Gegenwart

The history of literary criticism – defined as public and continuous comment on the current production of books – can be traced back more or less 300 years. This essay presents an opportunity to describe the changes in style, media, and social background in the history of literary criticism by using Régis Debray’s methodology known as ›mediology‹. By identifying three different ›mediaspheres‹ at the end of the 17th century (the ›homiliasphere‹, ›logosphere‹, and ›graphosphere‹ of literary criticism), it is possible not only to outline a development of literary criticism, but to illuminate the emergence of new styles, media, and milieus. At the same time, it becomes obvious that one ›mediasphere‹ does not simply replace another, but rather serves as its complement.
