Die Schönsten des Jahres. Misswahlen und Schönheitsköniginnen im deutschen Film der 1950er und frühen 1960er Jahre




Every year since 1950 a »Miss Germany« has been selected – in a procedure reported in all the media of the time. Over that period, beauty contests have also become a part of entertaining touristic events, drawing on the attractiveness of women and the commercialization of the female body as an object of sexualised public performances. They indicate contexts of modernization and commercialization in West Germany after World War II, showing the transformation of gender roles and of the self-concept of young German women as well as the growth of the German media, entertainment and fashion industries.
