Abstract

The London underground is the world’s oldest underground system. From the very beginning she fascinated not only designers and architects but also painters and writers. Stations were built that resembled boulevards and places or that voiced the desire for the exotic. During the Second World War she functioned as a shelter for millions of people, as can be observed in Henry Moore’s drawings. But the tube also served an organizing function. She was responsible for the organisation of the working classes and therefore she represented a surveillance tool, controlling the flow of millions of people.
