Beautiful friend. Apokalypse als Prokrastination in The End (1967) von The Doors

This article analyses the song The End from The Doors focusing on the interplay of lyrics, music and visual elements, from the album versions to the song’s appearance in Francis Ford Coppola’s film Apocalypse Now. Following Roland Barthes’ theory of ré-écriture the analysis does not aim at a concrete identification of the artists’ intention but at describing the complex conjunction of several levels of meaning expressed in semantic, symbolic, pragmatical, referential and hermeneutic codes. That way it becomes possible to show the oscillation of the text between several topics (end of love, hope or the world) and levels of time and space.
