»Ende in Sicht!«. »Alter« und »Apokalypse« im modernen Kirchenlied

During the past few decades traditional reflections on doomsday (»dies ira«) have on the whole vanished from Catholic and Protestant liturgy as well as from contemporary hymns. However, some church songs originating in the recent past have dealt with the end of the world from an ecological perspective or have outlined the New Jerusalem envisioned at the end of the Book of Revelation. Although old age is becoming more and more important in church life, contemporary hymns on this topic are hardly to be found. On the whole, death, either individual or global, is not represented with pathos in modern hymns as the »ultima linea rerum«. It appears rather as the starting point for a new life.
