Abstract

Realism does not necessarily look ›realistic‹. Dealing with the motif of mountains, and more specifically, of the Alps, this essay aims to show how the artistic intentions that 19th-century Realism had developed in turning away from the Goethe era’s idealism result in an essential condensation of reality. By parallelizing three authors (Adalbert Stifter, Gottfried Keller and Conrad Ferdinand Meyer), this paper will, on the one hand, give an overview of different ideas of nature. On the other hand, it will illustrate how changes of the concept of reality eventually lead from Realism to Symbolism.
