Abstract

When the American media artist Hasan Elahi launched his personal website www.trackingtransience.net, he had two different purposes in mind. Primarily, to exploit contemporary lifecasting and webcam techniques that became popular in the 1990s. Second, in a reversal of conceptual differences like private/public, open/secret or discreet/indiscreet, Elahi puts his everyday life on public display in order to reclaim his personal privacy, which seems to be constantly threatened by government surveillance. This article discusses Elahi’s artistic devices as a means of escaping the dichotomy of surveillance/sousveillance as well as establishing the paradoxical condition of public privacy.
