Von der Modernisierungs- zur Interkulturalitätswissenschaft. Stationen der geschichtlichen Entwicklung der Germanistik in Japan

The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the history and the development of German Studies (›Germanistik‹) in Japan. In the 19th century circles of conservative Japanese supported the teaching of German at Japanese schools and universities. Since then Japanese German Studies followed in its methodological and thematic approach mostly the example of German Studies in Germany until the 1990s. Currently some new movements are discernible, indicating that Japanese German Studies are in the process of establishing themselves as a specific and independent academic discipline. These movements are expected to create innovative and intercultural studies about German literature and culture in the future.
