Abstract

Adalbert Stifter’s forgotten political essays, published between 1848 and 1850 in various Austrian journals, can be read as examples for the realistic attitude of the post-revolutionary period. Dealing with topics like state, justice, or freedom, Stifter adopts an objective and artistically fundamental approach, which applies to his way of thinking as well as to his style. Thus, he intends to legitimate the secularized institutions and educate the people, who from now on have to represent the political society. The historic focus is marked by references to Comte, Feuerbach, Mill, Hebbel, and Keller.
