Abstract

The postmodern actualisations of Hermes, the ancient mythological messenger of the gods, in two novels by Italo Calvino and Sten Nadolny can be regarded as different fictional figures reflecting contemporary discussions in poetological and scientific theory. Both fulfil the specific requirements of literature while simultaneously showing how literature, philosophy, and science are enmeshed in postmodernism. However, the two configurations of Hermes focus on different models of postmodernism: while Calvino presents a structural model of postmodern telling, Nadolny develops a symbolic model of postmodern knowledge.
