Abstract

At the beginning of the twentieth century the human brain ceased to be regarded as the physical equivalent of identity in the different disciplines of medicine and philosophy. In the same period medicine identified the brain as the physiological origin of language. Using the examples of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s famous fictional letter Ein Brief and Gottfried Benn's virtually unknown early work Unter der Großhirnrinde. Briefe vom Meer this essay demonstrates that the crisis of language, identity and cognition was also rooted in changes in brain science.
