Abstract

The following article argues that the academic lecture is not merely a report whereby a given amount of information is conveyed from speaker to audience but a scene of research producing knowledge and insight – in this respect comparable to the scientific experiment. Focusing on the foundation of the modern German university around 1800 I try to show in which respects the scene of the lecture is crucial for the development of the humanities.
