Bernard Dieterle

Der Rhein – Landschaft, Kultur, Literatur

The author proposes a paradigm that can demonstrate to students the wide range of methods in culture studies. It attempts to work through a network of interdependent questions centring on the Rhine as an object of nature, culture, and literature, with special attention paid to the equation between the Rhine and Germany. All these problems are focused on the figure of the Lorelei – an invention of German Romanticism, constantly reworked through its articulation in texts, songs, legends, and pictures – and its development in the varied discourses of travel literature, folksong, and folklore as well as through politics and literary history. It is only by adopting a cultural approach that all these diverging aspects can be integrated.
