Sein Onkel, der Astronom und Mathematiker Christian Ludwig Ideler, vermittelte seinen Neffen 1811 an das Friedrich-Wilhelm-Institut in Berlin, wo er ein Studium der Medizin begann. Durch den Frankreich-Feldzug wurde das Studium 1815 unterbrochen. Ideler promovierte 1820 und praktizierte ab 1821 in Bernau, sp\u00e4ter in Rathenow und schlie\u00dflich in Genthin. 1828 kehrte er als \u00e4rztlicher Leiter der Abteilung f\u00fcr Geisteskranke der Charit\u00e9 nach Berlin zur\u00fcck. Die neue Position kam ihm sehr entgegen, da er f\u00fcr die \u00e4rztliche Praxis wenig Neigung versp\u00fcrte.
